Over half of the global population currently lives in urban areas, projected to reach 70 per cent by 2050. By creating sustainable buildings, transport and infrastructure today, cities can lay the foundations for a net zero emissions future.

Climateworks wants to transform urban living, working and commuting by aligning buildings, transport and infrastructure with net zero.

Transport is one of Australia’s largest sources of emissions – and the fastest-growing, while infrastructure influences up to 70 per cent of Australia’s emissions. At the same time the energy performance of housing – see our Decarbonisation Futures report – must improve by nearly fifty per cent over the next decade for Australia to reach net zero emissions by 2050.

The technical solutions for net zero emissions cities are well known, and many are ready to roll out this decade. Electrifying our buildings and vehicles using renewable electricity, energy efficiency, mass transit, and smarter precinct planning and design also bring financial, environmental and social benefits.

Our research into buildings, transport and infrastructure has identified key priorities to decarbonise our cities. Through our unique convening approach we can build a vision for the future with key decision makers and stakeholders.
