Nearly half of Australia’s exports come from economic sectors where carbon emissions are not easily reduced. Timely action is needed for Australian industry to be positioned for competitiveness in a decarbonised global economy.
Climateworks is working with some of Australia’s largest companies to accelerate action towards achieving net zero emissions in heavy industry. Our partners are from industry and business sectors which are key to decarbonising critical industrial supply chains.
Industry accounts for nearly half of Australia’s overall emissions. Mining and manufacturing are important to Australia’s economy and exports and are among the most challenging areas to decarbonise.
Australia has the opportunity to remain a global energy and commodity leader, if the sector is equipped to shift. The country has rich wind and solar resources and the potential to develop other renewable energy technologies, including green hydrogen.
The transition will require the sector to move together in embracing decarbonisation solutions. The Australian Industry Energy Transition Initiative, convened by Climateworks and Climate-KIC, with CSIRO, RMI and ETC has brought together leaders in Australian industry and business to share knowledge, develop industry-backed pathways, and accelerate action towards net zero emissions across critical supply chains of the Australian economy.
