Our mission

The Climateworks mission is to accelerate action to achieve net zero emissions within Australia, Southeast Asia and the Pacific, aligned with the global goal of limiting warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius.

The sustainable development goals

As part of the Monash Sustainable Development Institute, we are committed to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which were established to address some of the most significant challenges facing our world today. Our overarching goal is SDG number 13 – climate action – but we believe a climate transition that considers the social, economic and environmental impacts and opportunities supports all 17 goals.

Why 1.5 degrees Celsius?

To avoid the worst impacts of climate change, global temperature rise must be limited to well below 2°C. Each increment of temperature rise multiplies the frequency and severity of extreme weather – every tenth of a degree matters. Climateworks pursues ambitious action in line with 1.5°C and shared planetary safety.

Climateworks is having real influence and impact on governments, business and the wider community. Though climate change policy has been extremely fraught and politically difficult in recent years, Climateworks has become a key advisor for both sides of politics.

In partnership with Monash University, the Myer Foundation founded Climateworks, recognising a new approach to drive action on climate change – one that understood the needs of business, government and investors.

Globally, philanthropic groups recognise the enormous risks climate change poses to communities worldwide. Reducing emissions is now considered just as vital to a sustainable community as addressing social disadvantage and supporting health, education and the arts.
