Australia should set a long term goal of net-zero emissions by 2050.
Australia has committed to the Paris Agreement which sets out collective global action to avoid dangerous climate change. While it is a challenge, research shows that Australia can reach net zero emissionsby 2050 using today’s technologies.
In 2017 Climateworks made a submission to the review of Australia’s climate change policies. Drawing on engagement with key stakeholders and extensive research, it shows we can reach net zero emissions while growing employment and our economy.
The submission makes the case that setting a net zero by 2050 target, as part of a long-term plan, will support an effective transition. Australia has many opportunities to develop its potential in a global clean economy. Delay in making the most of these opportunities will be costly in the long run.
