The Australian Government has committed to a national target to protect and conserve 30 per cent of Australia’s land and 30 per cent of its marine areas by 2030 (30 by 30 target).

The Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water (DCCEEW) has sought views on the draft National Roadmap to achieve the 30 by 30 target.

Climateworks recommends DCCEEW take into account the following considerations when finalising the National Roadmap:

  • The National Roadmap clearly demonstrates how it relates to and supports other related government policies and the Agriculture and Land Sectoral Plan.
  • The National Roadmap shows how government accounts for different land uses to enable synergies between conservation and climate goals as it selects areas for the 30 by 30 protection goal.
  • Alongside this National Roadmap, the government develop a plan for scaling Nature-based Solutions to support synergistic climate and biodiversity positive outcomes.
  • Consider using integrated land use modelling and other Climateworks tools to support national target setting and decision making.

More detail on these recommendations can be found in the submission.
