Climateworks is prioritising work with countries in Southeast Asia with high projected emissions growth, creating solutions that can be shared and scaled throughout the region.
Our approach focuses on partnerships, coalition building and capacity building.
In the past month, our work in the region has touched on all three of these areas, giving us opportunities to share solutions as well as learn from others championing the region’s decarbonisation.
Coalition building: The power of finance to accelerate the net zero transition
Anna Skarbek, who last year joined the Glasgow Financial Alliance for Net Zero (GFANZ) Asia-Pacific (APAC) Advisory Board, spoke at two events at the group’s inaugural summit.
She was on stage for a ‘fireside chat’ with GFANZ APAC Advisory Board chair and Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS) Managing Director Ravi Menon, and DBS Bank Group CEO Piyush Gupta.
The three talked about how sectoral pathways can provide invaluable information to banks and investors and will soon become a ‘must-have’ for the sector.
They also discussed how net zero transition plans are already starting to become a requirement for lending and investment and how financial institutions are preparing for climate disclosures to become the norm.
Anna also participated in a panel discussion about GFANZ’s role in Just Energy Transition Partnerships (JETP). Her fellow panellists were Managing Director General of Asia Development Bank Woo Chong Um, Regional Co-CEO of HSBC Asia Surendra Rosha and Special Advisor to the Minister of Finance Republic of Indonesia on Macroeconomic and Fiscal Policy Masyita Crystaline.
Anna presented Climateworks’ recent work, which sets out the four elements of a successful JETP.
Capacity building: Workshop on modelling the transition in the region
Senior Project Manager Jannata (Egi) Giwangkara, Business Analyst Tim Graham and Senior Analyst Muhammad (Rizki) Kresnawan contributed to a workshop in Bangkok on Low Emissions Analysis Platform (LEAP) modelling delivered by the Stockholm Environment Institute.
LEAP is a powerful, versatile software system for integrated energy planning and climate change mitigation assessment.
The workshop was part of the ASEAN Green Future project, a regional initiative, led by the UN Sustainable Development Solutions Network and Climateworks Centre, to work with Southeast Asia countries to build capacity and develop decarbonisation pathways at national and regional levels.
Partnerships: A voice on green economic opportunities for Australia and Vietnam
Southeast Asia Lead Trang Nguyen recently took part in a roundtable discussion on how Australia and Vietnam can foster improved economic and trade cooperation.
The discussion was hosted by the Australia Vietnam Policy Institute and Asialink Business as part of the launch of a new ‘Australia-Vietnam Business Champions’ report.
The roundtable gathered representatives from both countries’ governments as well as education, finance, technology, trade and investment experts.
Trang noted the increasing opportunities for green economy cooperation that both countries can tap into and highlighted ways to unblock this cooperation.
Trang has spoken about previously about opportunities for Vietnam in the global net zero economy.
