Yarra Trams is the brand name for Melbourne’s tram network. It is a franchise, currently operated by Keolis Downer, a joint venture that operates light rail and bus services in several Australian states. All of the electricity used to power Melbourne’s tram network and its fleet of more than 400 trams is offset by renewable energy from two Victoria solar facilities; the 38 MW Bannerton Solar Park and the 128 MW Numurkah Solar Farm (Victoria State Government 2020b). The Victorian state government buys certificates from renewable energy projects in the state, which provides funding for their development. Through this process, the state has linked 35 MW of generation capacity specifically to the electricity load of Melbourne’s tram network (Victoria State Government 2020a).
